Introduction

The School of Kinesiology at Yeungnam University endeavors to provide opportunities for all students to develop the skills, knowledge, and experience in sport, exercise, health, physical education, and diverse human performance.

The Sport Science Major prepares students for leadership roles in a wide variety of school, clinical and community-based physical activity, sport, fitness and health programs. The major program also nurtures student-athletes in varsity sports such as baseball, soccer, judo, track and field, ssireum, and wrestling, which are all nationally recognized. Within the well-established School, Dance Major is also specially designed to foster the understanding of dance and the learning of dance techniques.

The School of Kinesiology strives students to build necessary skills and knowledge in diverse facilities including three multipurpose indoor courts, a multipurpose outdoor courts, a multipurpose outdoor turf field and track, a baseball field, 24 tennis courts, three soccer fields, a wrestling & judo room, a taekwondo room, a table tennis room, a weight training room, a furnished gymnastic facility, and three dance studios. Also, students have opportunities to participate in various club activities of tennis, basketball, golf, swimming, mountaineering, bowling, swimming, soccer, volleyball, fitness training, dance, K-12 teacher prep study, TOEIC, and other study groups as well.

Sport Science Major

The Sport Science Major is designed to provide students with theory-based knowledge, lab and field experience, and physical activity and sport techniques that are critically required for the positions such as scholars, physical education teachers, and specialists. The curricula are focused not only to develop students' understanding of theories and principles in sport, exercise, health and human performance but also to enhance ability to manage and to instruct in various sports and exercise settings.

Dance Major

The Dance Major provides a creative teaching method to promote students' dance performance, creativity and the way of thinking based on cultural and social science knowledge. The curriculum includes practical courses on ballet, contemporary dance, practical dance, and Korean dance, choreography, workshop, history, criticism, stage make-up and other various programs.

Job Fields

Graduates from the School of Kinesiology are able to take leadership roles in diverse sport and exercise settings such as managers, instructors and coaches for different sports, fitness, and physical activities. Graduates from Dance Major work as performers, choreographers, and dance directors. In addition, 10% of students are eligible for obtaining a teachers’ certificate issued by the Minister of Education. Also, students with outstanding academic achievement and foreign language ability are supported to study abroad pursuing their master and/or doctoral degrees.

CONVERGENCE- AND INTEGRATION-BASED THINKING AND WRITING
The ability of analyzing and solving problems is emphasized as one of the conditions for survival in the 21st century and one of the core elements of creative capabilities. This course was designed to cultivate convergence- and integration-based creative capabilities, which are integrated problem-solving capabilities to collect, analyze and process knowledge and information by reinforcing the ability of analyzing and solving problems, recreate it in a synthetic fashion, and express it effectively through speech and writing. The course will help the students cultivate their synesthesia thinking and communication skills based on sympathy with other human beings, understanding of the community, and positivity or Gongseong that is sought after by Yeungnam University. Its ultimate goals are to promote the students' creative knowledge development and reinforce their writing capabilities consistently through "convergence- and integration-based thinking and writing as a problem-solving approach."

MODERN SOCIETY & SPORTS
This course is designed to appreciate the role and goal of modern sports from philosophical and scientific perspectives.

SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.

AEROBIC EXERCISE
This course emphasizes the development of understanding and skill in the basic fundamental principles of aerobic exercise.

UNDERSTANDING OF LIFE SCIENCE
This course introduces the academic concept of life sciences as the shared basic activities that humans commonly engage in out of necessity such as subsistence, housing, sociality, material goods, rituals, and physical activity. Accordingly, students will learn about the intrinsic value of humanity’s social wellbeing and acquire basic knowledge in each area of life sciences that is needed in order to become trained professionals by pursuing integrated perspectives drawn from the strengths in the various areas of the life sciences such as clothing, nutrition, housing, family, and physical education.

This course is open in Kinesiology major and Dance major, respectively. For Kinesiology major students the knowledges and techniques related to planning physical training and maintaining facilities & equipment are covered. For Dance major students the basis of techniques and skills to strengthen the body expression based on each dance genre.

This course is open in Kinesiology major and Dance major, respectively. For Kinesiology major students the knowledges and techniques related to fundamental physical performance and ability are covered. For Dance major, opportunity to practice fundamental movement and techniques will be provided according to dance genre.

EXERCISE & HEALTH
This course is designed to introduce the value of impact of physical fitness in the pursuit of wellness and health.

PRACTICAL ENGLISH
The aim of the course is to help students develop basic English verbal skills in real life situations. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with basic English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to practice speaking English utilizing basic English structures. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.

SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION AND SERVICE
This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). This course aims to foster a generous mind, learn knowledge and technology and build the capacity to contribute to building a society towards a safer and happier world through the study of theory and practice.

SOFTWARE AND AI
Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.

This course is designed to acquaint the student with human organism and its structures, functions and needs in relation to physical activity.

GYMNASTICS Ⅰ
This course is designed to help students to understand the principles of movement and to learn skills of various types of gymnastics.

NEW SPORTS
This course is designed to introduce new sports. The TreX Sports literally include traditional sports, e-sports and extreme sports; however, this course also includes diverse fusional sports, new recreational sports, game-originated sports, adapted sports, and many other new sports. Students are expected to understand the nature, specific rules, uniqueness, operation, and positive/negative experiences of the sports.

This course introduces the student to the fundamentals of soccer including introductory skills and rules of the game.

BASKETBALL
This course is designed to increase the students knowledge of basketball. Fundamental skills of passing, dribbling, shooting, rebounding, footwork and defense along with various offenses are acquired.

EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY
This course provides an undergraduate level, introductory overview of physiological responses and adaptations to physical activity.

PRINCIPLES AND METHODS OF PHYSICAL TRAINING
This course will introduce key principles of resistance training based on human anatomy, exercise physiology, biomechanics and motor learning & control. Topics such as program goals & objectives, fundamental theories & methods, and testing & evaluation of programs will be covered through this course.

SPORT PSYCHOLOGY
This course is designed to understand the interaction of behavior and performance as well as psychological benefits of exercises and sports.

SWIMMING
This course is designed to provide the student with various swimming strokes (crawl, back, brest and butterfly) and safety skills. The students improve endurance and versatility in swimming.

FOOTBALL
This course introduces the student to the fundamentals of soccer, including introductory skills and rules of the game.

GOLF
This course is designed for the student to learn basic knowledges techniques in golf. Lectures will cover i) swing with various clubs, ii) club fitting, and iii) rules and regulations.

GYMNASTICS Ⅱ
Students will have a chance to improve their skills and the quality of each movement of gymnastics. In addition, Advanced skills are to be practiced through a semester.

SPORTS ENGLISH
This course provides students with a chance to learn English related to sports and Kinesiology. Variety of materials such as textbooks, handouts, and video clips will be used for class activities. Class activities include reading, writing, and discussion in English.

SPORT MANAGEMENT
This course provides an introductory study of management fundamentals and organizational behavior. Students learn basic organizational theory, how individuals adapt to organizations. How managers motivate and lead in work situations, and how organizations are designed and managed. A section of the course will target current organizational climates in relation to managing change, conflict resolution, work force diversity, and problem solving.

SPORT SOCIOLOGY
This course presents social structure, social patterns and social organization of groups engaged in physical education and sports.

TRACK
This course is designed for the student to acquire theoretical knowledges and skills of track and field games. The basic skills of 100m running and 110 huddle are covered.

VOLLEYBALL
This course is designed to develop fundamental skills of volleyball such as the serving, passing, spiking and blocking. The rules and various strategies of the game are covered.

WINTER SPORTS
This course is designed to teach students the basic skills of snow sports such as skiing and snowboarding, and offer them the opportunity to practice alpine and free-style with instruction appropriate to various levels.
