Department of Family and Housing Studies

Introduction

The Department of Family and Housing Studies provides outstanding undergraduate, master's, and doctoral level education to help students learn how to form and maintain strong family relationships and enhance the abilities needed for establishing healthy and future-oriented housing cultures.

In the modern society, greater attention is given to psychological well-being, social welfare, and sustainable environments. In response to these trends, there are increasing needs for experts who can deal with issues in family lives and create design-centered 21st century housing. The department aims to foster experts in family lives and housing, who can contribute to establishing healthy and flourishing living environments for individuals, families, and communities. The department of Family and Housing Studies offers a wide range of courses in the areas of human ecology and provides students with rich hands-on experiences such as teaching practice in middle school or high school, research experiences, and graduate exhibition.

History

1968: Established Yeungnam University (Department of Family, College of Family)
1971: Offered master’s degree courses
1973: Offered Ph.D. courses
1980: Renamed to Department of Home Management
2004: Renamed to Department of Family and Housing Studies

Job Fields

Graduates of the department may find jobs in a variety of human services centers such as social welfare centers, healthy family support centers, and family-related research centers. They may also work for interior design departments at design companies, construction offices, and furniture design companies. By acquiring human engineering technician certificates, graduates can work at manufacturing companies, public organizations, educational institutions, consulting companies, research centers, and other human engineering organizations. It is also a great opportunity to pursue academic jobs after obtaining graduate degrees in family studies or interior design.

FAMILY COUNSELING PRACTICE
The course is designed to teach techniques that enable growth and development through practicing family counseling techniques.

HOUSING STUDY METHODS
It analyzes the work which related to the house and interior design, and the study of the inside and outside of the country. Through this, we cultivates the ability to come true originative house plan and a interior design meaning.

THE FIELD PRACTICE OF HEALTHY FAMILY
This course offers students an opportunity to practice their theoretical knowledge of healthy family.

THEORY OF HOME ECONOMICS EDUCATION
The course is to enhance the ability of the home economics teachers through acquisition of general knowledge and technical skills required in home life.

FIELDWORK FOR HOUSING AND INTERIOR DESIGN I
The purpose of this subject is to develop Housing Interior Design ability for fieldwork. Students will have senses of Housing and Interior Design process.

MENTAL HEALTH
The course is the look over the contemporary meaning and study various obstacle factors of mental health, healing of mental disorder and prevention (DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY AND HOUSING STUDIES - From 2008) The course is designed to explore the meaning of health in the contemporary society, and to find out effective preventions.

This course is about to teach the social work techniques used by the social welfare system and to acquire the knowledge of social welfare system and the social service methods.

THEORY AND PRACTICE OF SEX COUNSELING
The course help students to understand and practice various types of sex-related problems and to develop desirable roles and attitudes toward sex.

URBAN ENVIRONMENT DESIGN AND PLANNING
The course, Urban Environment Design and Planning concerns various urban design such as urban environment planning, bridge and symbolized object design, and townscape design so that students can achieve the practical knowledge of urban environment design practice.
