Undergraduate Programs

Department of Chemistry

Introduction

Chemistry is a branch of natural sciences that deals with the properties, composition, structure and changes of matter.

In particular, chemistry is an experiment-based science that provides basic knowledge for natural science and engineering discipline through studies of the structure of molecules, the synthesis of novel organic and inorganic compounds, and separation of complex mixtures and analysis of matter. In addition, through interdisciplinary studies in these subjects, it plays a pivotal role in the development of creative and productive technologies.

The goal of this department is sub-divided as shown below, based on the education mission presented by our university for 'Creative human education based on a spirit of patriotism'.

  1. First, it provides education to help students understand natural principles and observe things with creative attitude, and human education for logical thinking abilities and rational comprehensive abilities.
  2. Second, by studying theories and experiments on natural science, students will equip with creative and proprietary problem solving skills in order to become the driving force in creative academic activities.
  3. Third, it fosters leading manpower with ability to actively resolve the general issues in the rapidly changing modern society through scientific thinking based on the understanding of natural phenomena through laboratory work of applying basic principles of chemistry.
  4. Fourth, chemistry is a basic discipline in natural science that fosters manpower in high-tech science by acquiring a wide range of knowledge on basic science.
  5. Fifth, it fosters manpower that can work for industries based on their chemical knowledge.
  6. Sixth, it provides education that can adapt to actual production by acquiring chemistry theories via laboratory exercises.

HISTORY

The Department of Chemistry was authorized on December 26, 1968 and was installed under the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. It recruited 30 new students in its first year in March 1969. It was approved for master degree courses in December 1973 and for PhD courses in December 1979. In November 1981, a chemistry education major was opened in the Graduate School of Education.

The number of students for undergraduate studies was increased to 40 in December 1976 and in December 1976, it was increased to 80. However, the college reduced the number of students for the department to 60 in December 1989 in order to provide better education.

As of March 20110, the Department of Chemistry graduated 1,944 undergraduate students, 256 masters and 42 PhDs. The faculty of chemistry is currently consisted of 10 professors (9 national and 1 alien professor). Active research is being conducted using the precision instruments installed in the Central Analysis Center, and in 1993, the Ministry of Education selected this department as an outstanding department in its national evaluation.

In particular, the following instruments are utilized to enhance the quality of education: 600-MHz FT-NMR(Fourier transformation nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer), AAS(Atomic absorption spectrophotometer), XRD(X-ray diffraction spectrometer), HPLC(High-performance liquid chromatograph), GC(Gas chromatograph), FT-IR(Fourier transformation infrared spectrophotometer), Polarimeter, Fluorescence spectrophotometer, Mass spectrometer, Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, TEM(Transmission electron microscope), SEM(Scanning electron microscope), EA(Elemental analyzer), Thermal Analyzer(TG/DTA/DSC), and work stations.
