A research thesis with YU College of Medicine (Dean Yoon Sung-soo) undergraduates as the first author was carried by an acclaimed international journal. The authors of the study are College of Medicine seniors Park Soo-min and Oh Sae-chang (Advisor: Professor of Pediatrics Sciences). The study that they published are the results of Effectiveness of rapid multiplex polymerase chain reaction for early diagnosis and treatment of pertussis.
Pertussis is a respiratory infection with very high infectivity and while all citizens receive vaccination, it is a disease with a high occurrence rate both in Korea and the entire world. The authors revealed that the fast diagnosis and treatment through multiplex PCR tests conducted within 1 hour for 17 different respiratory infection sources are effective for preventing the spread of the highly contagious pertussis.
This study was published in the international academic journal ‘Journal of Microbiology, Immunology and Infection'. This journal is an internationally acclaimed journal in infection sciences and it is significant in that a study led by undergraduate students was carried. In particular, this study participated in the Yeongui Student Academic Conference held by the YU College of Medicine and it was also presented in the 2019 Fall Korean Pediatric Society conference and the 2019 ICIC & ISAAR 2019 (4th International Interscience Conference on Infection and Chemotherapy) & ISAAR (12th International Symposium on Antimicrobial Agents and Resistance) international conference.
College of Medicine Pediatric Science Professor Lee Jae-min who advised the students said, “This was even more significant in the fact that it is the fruits reaped through the Yeongui Student Academic Conference, which is the YU College of Medicine’s student research support program that has internally procured budget and was carried out for over 10 years with the goal of fostering capable medical scientists.”
해당 논문은 국제 학술지인 'Journal of microbiology, immunology and infection'에 게재됐다. ICIC & ISAAR 2019 (4th International Interscience Conference on Infection and Chemotherapy) & ISAAR (12th International Symposium on Antimicrobial Agents and Resistance)
