The Institute for Drug Research was founded in September 1990, to pursue basic and applied researches related to the development of new drugs.

The institute consists of five divisions, Medicinal Chemistry, Life Sciences, Drug Action and Safety, Pharmaceutics, and Social Pharmacy.
The institute holds an annual symposium as well as weekly seminars, and publishes The Archives of Drug Research annually.
